G7-landene lover gjeldsslette for Haiti

Etter et G7-møte i Canada denne helgen ble det kunngjort at de syv landenen vil slette Haitis gjeld. De vil også oppfordre andre utlånere, inkludert de multilaterale institusjonene til å gjøre det samme.

G7-landene - Canada, USA, Storbritania, Frankrike, Tyskland, Italia og Japan - har siden jordskjelvkatastrofen vært under sterkt press for å hjelpe Haiti. Etter at landene ble enige om å slette Haitis gjeld gikk den britiske statsministeren Gordon Brown ut med lovprisning og kommenterte at Storbritania vil jobbe for at løftene blir oppfylt: "Det må være riktig at et land begrav i jord og stein slipper å vere begravd i gjeld."

Den amerikanske finansministeren, Timothy Geithner, har også gått ut og sagt at USA vil jobbe for en enighet rundt Haitis gjeld tilmulilaterale donorer som den interamerikanske utviklingsbanken. Geithner sier at IMF bør slette all Haitis gjeld, inkludert det nye lånet som nettopp ble gitt.
