Bred støtte for å få sletta Haitis gjeld

Mandag 25. januar 09.30 overleverte SLUG, KN og Changemaker over 4000 underskrifter som ber Norge om å bruke sin stemme for å slette Haitis resterende gjeld og sikre at all bistand til Haiti nå utelukkende gis som gaver. Sammen med underskriftene leverte vi et organisasjonsopprop der 20 organisasjoner og ungdomsparti viser sin støtte til kampanjen. Mange av SLUGs tilsluttede organisasjoner har engasjert seg for å skaffe flest mulig underskrifter for å få sletta Haitis resterende gjeld. Det er flott å se at så mange kaster seg rundt og henger seg på en slik hasteaksjon. 

 

Rundt om i hele verden har hundretusenvis av mennesker krevd fullstendig slettting av Haitis utestående gjeld etter det katastrofale jordskjelvet. De internasjonale finansinstitusjonene har kommet med signaler om at de vil vurdere tiltak, men det gjenstår å se hvilke konkrete tiltak de kan få på plass.

Gjeldsslette uten betingelser vil være det første steget for å sikre at befolkningen i Haiti kan ta kontroll over egen økonomi og egne ressurser. Dette er budskapet mennesker over hele verden nå sender til de internasjonale finansinstitusjonene. Vi får håpe de lytter. 

Norske myndigheter har gjort en bra innsats for Haiti. De sier nå også at de vil jobbe opp mot de internasjonale finansinstitusjonene for å få slettet Haitis gjeld, og også for å sikre at ny bistand nå blir gitt som lån. Gjeldsslettenettverket her i Norge kommer til å følge med, og vi måler våre politikere på hva som blir gjort framover - ikke hva som blir sagt.

Previous experience shows that reductions in income poverty have been largest in regions which achieved high growth rates. The impact of growth on poverty however is not straightforward and several issues are often overlooked which mean that some groups are left behind in the growth process.
