A New Economic Paradigm?
Debt Justice Norway and Human International Documentary Film Festival had the pleasure of hosting a panel debate on the topic A New Economic Paradigm? Sunday 11 March. The European director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Jeffrey Franks attended, along side a very competent panel: Maria Berg Reinertsen, economist, author and journalist at
Morgenbladet; Erik Reinert, economist and professor at Tallinn University of Technology and developmental scientist Camilla Houeland, specializing on labour organization.
Since the 1930’s global political economy has moved, broadly speaking, from a Keynesian understanding to a neo-liberal one. Through IMF conditionalities countries have implemented liberalist reforms. These reforms have in some instances led to growth in inequality, lower job security, reduced minimum wage and cut in state pensions. Do these policies create positive development or should the welfare of the population in a country in economic crisis take centre stage? Do we need a new economic paradigm?
